What is peer support, and how is it different from therapy?

Our peer specialists use their own lived experience with mental health and recovery to connect with you as an equal — not as a clinician. They listen without judgment, share practical strategies, and walk beside you as you work toward your goals.

Is peer support the same as therapy or counseling?

No. Peer support is NOT clinical therapy, counseling, or a replacement for medical or psychiatric care. Our peer specialists don't diagnose conditions, prescribe medication, or provide treatment. Instead, they offer connection, encouragement, and real-world support — and they can help you navigate and stay engaged with the clinical care you already have.

Who can use your services?

We serve individuals and families across North Carolina who are working toward mental wellness, recovery from substance use, housing stability, independence, or employment. You don't need a specific diagnosis or a referral from a provider to reach out — if you think peer support could help, it probably can.

What services do you offer?

We offer six core services: Mental Health Peer Support, Substance Use & Recovery Peer Support, Housing Stability & Resource Navigation, Independent Living & Life Skills, Employment Readiness & Goal Development, and Recovery Planning & Personal Goal Support. Every plan is built around your goals — you choose where to start.

Question 5

How is a peer specialist different from a therapist or case manager?

We offer peer support — not therapy — so you always know the difference. Peer support is guidance and encouragement from someone with real lived experience; therapy is clinical treatment from a licensed clinician. Many people benefit from both, and our peer specialists can help you stay connected to any clinical care you receive.

Do I need a diagnosis, referral, or paperwork to get started?

No. You never need a diagnosis, a referral, insurance details, or paperwork to request services. Your first conversation with us is simply about getting to know you and what you're looking for — that's it.

How do I get started?

Getting started is simple: fill out the short form on our Request Services page, or call 252-266-8553 or email resiliencerevivalpeer@outlook.com. A real person reviews every request personally and will reach out within 1–2 business days using your preferred contact method.

What happens in the first conversation?

Your first conversation is relaxed and pressure-free. A peer specialist will get to know you, listen to what you're hoping for, and talk through which services might fit. Nothing is required of you — many people tell us it feels more like talking with someone who understands than an intake appointment.

Question 9

How much do services cost? Do you take insurance?

The honest answer is: it depends, and we'll always be upfront with you. We help people navigate funding options, community resources, and assistance programs, but we never guarantee financial assistance for any service. Contact us and we'll walk you through what's currently available.

Question 10

What information do you collect, and what do you never ask for?

We only collect the basics — your name and how to reach you. Our forms never ask for diagnoses, Social Security numbers, Medicaid IDs, or sensitive medical information. You choose what to share, when to share it, and how much.

Is what I share kept private and confidential?

What you share with your peer specialist is treated with respect and care. We keep the information you provide confidential and only share it as needed to serve you — such as connecting you with a resource you've asked for. For the full details, see our Privacy Policy.

Question 12

Can I refer someone else — a family member or a client?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Family members can reach out on a loved one's behalf, and case managers, clinics, shelters, faith communities, and other organizations can refer the people they serve. Fill out the Request Services form and select "On behalf of a client (referral partner)" — or call us directly to talk it through.

Where do you provide services?

We provide peer support across North Carolina and meet people where they are — in person or by phone, in homes, community settings, and partner organizations. Our office hours are Monday–Thursday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM and Friday, 9:00 AM–2:00 PM.

Question 14

What should I do if I'm in crisis right now?

Accepted Answer

Peer support is not crisis response. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 911. For 24/7 mental health crisis support, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). Once you're safe, we're here to support your next steps.
